Congratulations to James August Weber! He was randomly selected for our August Kindle Fire giveaway for his entry in the Carpe Momento Contest.
Here’s James Carpe Momento:
"Anyone who has seen a Berkshire Bateria performance knows how exciting their samba rhythms can be. Now the most exciting band in the Berkshires wants to perform during the World's most exciting event: The Soccer World Cup in Brazil, in June 2014. The governing agency for the event, FIFA, has announced the theme for the World's largest sporting event to be: “ALL IN One Rhythm!” Berkshire Bateria wants to bring our drumming group to share in the Brazilian culture and perform along with a host band in Itapua, Bahia, Brazil. The Bateria was founded in 1997 by me and my wife Teri. We have performed all over New England, locally appearing at Jacobs Pillow, Shakespeare and CO., Tanglewood, Norman Rockwell Museum, The Mahaiwe Theater—and in 2011, were the featured performers at the State House in Boston for the MA Cultural Council’s annual meeting.
We look forward to standing shoulder to shoulder with our Brazilian counterparts and performing for the throngs of world tourists sure to flock to this event. We would proudly represent our Berkshire community that has so strongly supported us over the years. Teri and I often present our "Joy of Samba Drumming Workshops" to school children of all grade levels, and plan to document the trip with video to use as future teaching aides. Another goal of our trip will be to purchase and donate instruments to our hosting band “Unidos Do Itapua,” a group formed to help "at risk" youths in the city of Salvador, Bahia Brazil.
Our three children, are core members of the Berkshire Bateria: Raina (founder and former director of Project Native); Miles (former lead soccer scoring player at Monument Mountain High School and Western United, four time Commonwealth of Massachusetts champion); and Monte (music composition major in his senior year at Columbia College in Chicago, and just won the Carlsbad Music Festival Composers Competition). My Carpe Momento would occur as I look across the stage at my family, and other members of the Bateria, all playing Samba as we have done hundreds of times in the Berkshires, only now we are together in Brazil during the World Cup, sharing the excitement literally playing “All in One Rhythm!” "
